I posted my movie analysis at the Haven Board and some X-philes told me to let you know it. So here I am.
GREAT MOVIE
That's how I saw it. For me... This movie is about the most unsolved and mysterious of "The X-Files:" not the case itself, who’s capturing girls, chopping them and why. No.
The X-File here is LOVE.
Viewed in different ways: the love that saves, the one that destroys, the love that forgives and the love that makes you NEVER GIVE UP.
SCULLY'S LAST TEMPTATION
This movie is also about normal life on earth, the very last temptation for Scully. To live a life with Mulder. To have a life. Almost a normal one. At the end of "Fight the Future," Mulder tells Scully to go away. “Go! be a doctor.” He doesn’t want to see her dying ‘cause of him.
Scully really aspires to normality. And Mulder really want to give her that gift. She wanted a baby, Mulder tried and helped her in this. Now she wanted to settle down and Mulder did it.
THE LOVE THAT DESTROYS
Love is not always a good thing. Most of all not when is something of possessive and egoistic.
The most destroying love is the lust of Father Joe: he abused children (abuse is one way love?), a thing that Scully can never forgive.
From that evil, the devil creates other evils… one of the abused child is the ‘cause of the girls murders.
Negative love is also the one of the Russian man that wanted to save his partner life killing people. But negative is also Scully’s love for Mulder. It’s something egoistic and possessive, too.
I said that she wanted to settle down. So Mulder stopped to run and most of all stopped to live.
To give her a life, he stopped to live his. He stays confined. Isolated. Scully is happy? No. She sensed that so Mulder was not living and forces him out of the situation. The egoistic circle is broken. Mulder is out, starts living again and knows that doing so, he can loose her. So he always wants her by his side. He really can’t live without her. This Scully is an egoistc person (I'm a doctor now, but Mulder what is he? ) and a possessive one, she can kills with a look, when the young FBI agent tries to touch Mulder’s face. And when she lets him leave, lets him go, than the love that destroys starts to be something positive. Before, Scully is full of fears: to lose him, of the darkness, to not to be able to save that boy. When Father Joe told her not to give up, she was shocked, ‘cause she had given up at that point. She had given up even Mulder.
THE LOVE THAT FORGIVES
The real force of love is to forgive. Forgive the sins, forgive the errors that were made. When Scully’s start to accept Father Joe for what he is or he’s not, she has to accept the idea that maybe God can forgive even a children abuser, if he’s looking for redemption.
And that’s the key, She has to accept things for what they are. Mulder for what he is, not changing him, sorrow for what it is, (the hospital name is Mother of sorrows), even the illness. At that point the walls start falling down. Scully tells Mulder that she had fallen in love for what he was (and not for what he has became for her sake).
To accept Mulder's obsession is something that she has to do. Stopping to be egoistic. Stopping trying to possess Mulder.
THE COLD, THE NIGHT AND THE ICE
Everything here is cold, ice and night. And the background reflects the souls. Souls in the storm. Mulder and Scully as one, most of all. They’re entrapped in ice. They love each other, they are together but miles adrift. Sometimes Scully is really cold with him, and just when she melted down at the end, there’s light and the snow is gone away. And than there’s place for the sun.
THE LOVE THAT SAVES AND CURES
Loving Mulder is to let him go and then running after him to save him. Again and again. Scully’s back, where she didn’t want to go. But when she has to forgive Mulder for what he is. Her loves becomes salvation. Of Mulder’s life, and maybe of the child’s, too.
Mulder is once again ready to die for her, if she wants him to, they can go away, he seems ready to not live again for her life. For her love. This time is Scully that has to give up. She has to give up her desire for a normal life. To love Mulder. She will abandon her last temptation: normality. His love will save her. Will save them. And the child, too.
