RUSSIAN OR NOT RUSSIAN
Greetings from Russia!
There are two IWTB showings left in our city and of course me and my X-phile friends are gonna watch the movie again! We watched it many times (some of my friends watched it more than 20 times) and as you can know it resulted in #1 places for 2 weeks in Russia (thank God there was no "Dark Knight" on our screens at that time). I think it is a proof that despite of poor promotion IWTB could perform so much better if it wasn't for "Dark Knight"'s shadow and hysteria. But let's not think about bad things. IWTB was absolutely fantastic and, needless to say, we all love the movie and we discuss it every time we leave the theatre. There are so many things (like questions of faith and moral aspects) in this multi-layered movie that I'm sure we are gonna discuss it until XF3 comes out (hopefully).
But there's only one thing that is really bugging Russian fans and I hope you can clarify it. In the movie some characters speak Russian and in the official novelization it is stated that two abductors -- Janke Dacyshyn and Franz Tomczeszyn -- are indeed Russians. But the problem is -- Janke and Franz are not Russian names at all! We just don't have these names. And their last names (Dacyshyn and Tomczeszyn) don't sound very Russian as well. In fact, their names and last names sound more Polish or Eastern European.
In the "X-Files" TV series you were always accurate with other nations' names (including Russian names) so it was quite surprising for us to see such strange "Russian" names for supposedly Russian characters. We hope you can clarify this enigma.

You are of course right about the names -- they came from friends and colleagues, not from research, which is why they're not authentically Russian. As for why the bad guys in the movie were Russian, it's because experiments like the ones we depict in the film actually were performed on dogs in the Soviet Union in the 1950s.
