INSPIRING

I never, EVER thought I would do this, but after seeing the film and reading some of the reviews, I feel compelled to submit something here.
I was a freshman in college when "The X-Files" debuted on Fox, and have been a fan since late Season One. I still remember the first episode I saw: "Darkness Falls." I knew almost nothing about the series, and was completely shocked when Mulder and Scully almost died at the end. Few recall this now, but a show with heroes who didn't always win, and stories that weren't always resolved was really, really unusual. Not only that, but "The X-Files" was consistently profound in ways I still have yet to see again on TV. There wasn't a single big question about the human condition you didn't tackle. It was the epitome of the "thinking person's" show.
At some point, the show became a cultural phenomena, and while the "thinking person" elements were still there, convincing most people that aliens were just one tiny part of "The X-Files" was almost impossible. Truthfully, I'd nearly forgotten it myself. Until I saw this film.
I honestly can't say what I expected from the movie, but it certainly wasn't the small, intimate, beautiful gift of a film I got. Frankly, I can't believe they even let you make it. The intricate, complicated story demands your patience and intelligence without arrogance or condescension. It is sad, and hopeful, and real. It would have been so easy to rest on the recognizable tentpole elements, like everyone else does these days, but you didn't. Regardless of what happens, I can't thank you enough.
All these years later, I'm a fledgling writer (and fellow AFI alum!) in Los Angeles. I became one the night I met Mulder and Scully, and saw firsthand the courage of the writing staff. Maybe like Mulder, the beauty of "The X-Files" will only ever be understood by a select few. If anything I manage to create has even a smidgen of that beauty, I'll consider my life a success.
Thank you for inspiring me in every conceivable way.
