"AUX FRONTIERES DU REEL"
I'm sending you this mail on behalf of the French X-philes community that is quite upset since this morning. I thought that you should know about this.
The French title of the movie "The X-Files: I Want To Believe" has been released today and fans are not happy!
They decided to title the film, "The X-Files: Regeneration," which is completely ridiculous, total nonsense -- and a mistake. The title that you chose is completely along the lines of what the series was, and what you want the movie to be. "Regeneration" tells more about the plot than you even wanted to say.
You tried so far to preserve the mystery about this feature, and thank you for doing that because you want first and foremost to preserve the surprise for us, the fans, and now with this French title, we feel that everything is completely ruined.
We know that Chris Carter had to fight for his title, and that's why we are reacting so badly to this news.
We wanted to know if you were aware of this change in the title. I know ( as I work in the field, too, as a student in movie translation ) that it is completely normal that movie titles change when they come to be adapted in a foreign language, but to this extent, we believe that's a little too far, given the original title.
And to be completely honest, the phrase "I Want to Believe" has become over the years a reference to the series and we think that there's no need to adapt it when it comes to the title. If they decided to keep the original title of the series, which in French was adapted in the 90s as "Aux frontières du Réel," why not keep the original and unforgettable "I Want To Believe?"
We've started a petition over here, but we know that it won't have the weight or the power to make things change…We think that you have the power to put some pressure on French Fox's representatives to change this if this is not what you wanted.

Thank you for your e-mail -- we weren't aware the title was changed. The studio tells me there are only two markets that deviated from a more or less literal translation of the English title, France and Germany. (Japan is running a fan competition to select a title.) The concern in France and Germany apparently was that the word "believe" might have a (misleading) religious connotation.
In France, the studio intended "Regeneration" to refer to the re-starting of "The X-Files."
In Germany, incidentally, the title is "Akte X: Jenseits der Wahrheit," which means "The X-Files: Beyond the Truth." "Akte X" is well-known there due to the TV series. "Beyond the Truth" is intended to suggest there is something tricky or mysterious to uncover.
