IN PRAISE OF MICHAEL WANDMACHER
After re-watching my "Night Stalker" DVDs recently, it occurs to me that music composer Michael Wandmacher is truly one of the unsung heroes of the show. His work on the pilot episode is so effective in an understated and minimalistic way, particularly the gentle piano movements for the opening and closing voice-overs and the pulsating sounds for the press conference montage. It's also striking how well these compositions match up with Philip Glass's main theme.
I remember hearing a while back that a soundtrack album was being considered for commercial release, then later that it was being reduced to an iTunes exclusive. Is there any truth to this? Will us fans ever be able to purchase any of the tracks from the show? Come to think of it, Mark Snow would do well to release a compilation or two from all nine years of "The X-Files!"
Anyway, thanks for all your hard work. Looking forward to "Amped."

You're so right about Michael's work. Without calling attention to itself, his score heightened every moment and made a huge contribution to the show. He did not, however, write the music that begins and ends the pilot. That was a piece by Max Richter called "Vladimir's Blues," which was tracked down by our music supervisor, P.J. Bloom. The beautiful, trance-like quality of that track was actually what inspired us to approach Philip Glass to write the main theme.
I don't know of any plans to release Michael's "Night Stalker" score or a compilation of Mark Snow's work from "The X-Files," although I think both are great ideas.
As for "Amped," the pilot has been shot, but -- for now, at least -- no broadcast plans have been made. As always, I'll let you know in this space when and if there's any news.
