HOW WILLIAM CAME TO BE
We have already written once, and we do not mean to be presumptuous or clog up the in-box, but we would love to be privy to some quick thoughts/insights into the arc of Scully's pregnancy (especially as you co-penned "Per Manum" and "Three Words," and gave us the gift that is "Alone"). We've been reliving seasons 7 & 8 recently, and often ruminate on how it is that Scully came to be pregnant. Did the in-vitro procedure in fact work and the clinic was mistaken? Was William conceived through the consummation of Scully & Mulder's relationship, despite her diagnosis of being barren and having had two bouts with cancer? Is he a miracle child, with allusions to Scully's religion and immaculate conception? Is it some sort of amalgamation of more than one possibility? (We recall in "The Truth" William is referred to as their "love child," but that seemed to be more the prosecutor's assumption.)
At any rate, whatever the truth may be, that arc is absolutely stunning. The juxtaposition of Scully's joy over her long-awaited pregnancy with her sorrow and despair for Mulder is unbelievably powerful (and brilliantly accentuated with Mark Snow's haunting score). Gillian Anderson is beyond talented -- words cannot describe how perfectly she played and layered each and every moment.
We would love to know some of your own personal thoughts on the origin of William, if you have the time. Thank you!!

As usual on "The X-Files," the answer is purposefully cloaked in ambiguity. We intended for the audience to be uncertain (and continue to harbor doubts) about how William came to be. But for me, the 8th season finale, "Existence," suggests that Mulder and Scully, at least, believe the baby was conceived by them. Both because Scully chooses to name him William (after Mulder's father) and because when Scully raises the question of his conception, Mulder says, "I think what we feared were the possibilities. The truth, we both knew."
