GETTING STARTED
Like everyone else who writes to you, I'm sure, I was a big fan of "The X-Files." I started tuning in to the show in elementary school when my (much) older sister began watching. It was the first TV show I watched regularly (besides "Sesame Street"). My parents must've been insane to let me watch it, but I thank them for it, despite my many nightmares. Now I'm in college and I watch the DVDs with my friends every Sunday night. I watch a lot of smart movies and television shows, but I'm still impressed by the consistent quality of "The X-Files" through the years.
But my question is not about "The X-Files." It is this: I'm graduating from a small liberal arts school next week with a Political Science degree, but what I really want to do is get into the film or television industry. I have no idea where to begin. I live in the Pacific Northwest. How can I get experience? I know "The X-Files" was filmed in Vancouver for a long time. Is there any hope that I could work in the industry without living in L.A.? Do I need to go to grad school in order to get the necessary skills? I don't know how much you can tell me about these things, but it's gotta be more than my Poli Sci advisor knows.

It depends what you want to do in film and television. If you're interested in working in production, then there are jobs in several major cities outside of Los Angeles, such as Vancouver, Toronto and New York. If you want to be a writer, producer or director, then I'd say without question the best thing to do is move to Los Angeles. You don't necessarily have to go to film school (although that can be very helpful), but living in Los Angeles gives you the chance to meet like-minded people, hone your skills, and find opportunities to work.
