WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN
It would seem that being a supporter of the updated "Night Stalker" has come to mean being a member in support of an instant cult classic. This is reminiscent of the afterlife of the original Kolchak series, and of what might have happened with "The X-Files" had the latter not aired on Fox, where it was given a chance to grow its audience over time. The extra time required to obtain the ten-episode DVD collection, plus the valuable if limited bonus features, due to its import status in Canada, was rewarded. I echo the comments of those who saw despite its limited exposure the unique style and potential which was evolving. With its genesis in the original Kolchak (plus the odd overt tribute, as in “Timeless” to “The Night Strangler”) mixed with the seeds of a gradually symbiotic relationship a la "The X-Files," in a garishly intriguing urban setting, we had here something worthwhile. Thankfully its short-lived tenure has been given the second life of DVD; we can re-experience what it was and imagine what could have been.
