BEYOND "THE SEA"
I just bought part two, "The Sea," from iTunes and wanted to say this was an excellent episode that really reflected the potential and intriguing aspects of the show. I REALLY resent the way the show was cancelled and the fact that ABC, which isn't showing anything in its place but pure crap!, didn't have the decency to air the second part.
They did little to promote "Night Stalker," putting all their money into "Invasion." I believe that "Night Stalker" would have been better suited after "Lost" than "Invasion" in the first place. But they placed "Night Stalker" on Thursday and put ZERO investment in it. This show was well-written, the characters well thought-out and, unfortunately, ABC was just not really interested in such a show judging by the way they cancelled it.
I am sad to see this show go and sad that it was bought by a network that had no intention of making the show successful. My only hope is that there will be a DVD with a lot a cool features about the show and in the future a TV movie that explains Kolchak's birthmark and how it relates to the bikers and his wife's death.
Thanks for putting something together that made me start to watch regular TV again.

I absolutely loved the last two episodes of "Night Stalker," especially “The Sea,” which I happily downloaded from iTunes. Thank you kindly for allowing fans to see part two of the story arc. “The Source” and “The Sea” really indicated the exciting direction the characters and the series as a whole were headed. Is there any chance the remaining two episodes will be made available for download from iTunes as well?
Thank you. I look forward to your next productions.

My wife and I found "Night Stalker" when Episode 5 was airing and we were instantly hooked. When I found out that we could download the first four episodes from iTunes we were even more excited. We quickly got caught up with those episodes waiting for the next installment and were not disappointed. "The Source" was a cliffhanger than made me long for more.
I played an episode for a friend on my iPod and he was hooked, too. While on vacation in the mountains we rushed into our cabin to turn on the second part of "The Source" and were shocked when it didn't air. Maybe they gave it a better time slot, I thought, figuring ABC realized it had a hit on its hands.
The sad reality hit me when I came home and checked on iTunes and saw the "exclusive episode." I still didn't want to believe it until I read the news on your website. How could they not see the potential? Why wouldn't they give it a real chance? Is there any chance it will return? Please let us know.
If not, please put any remaining episodes on iTunes so we can enjoy your spectacular work. The show was truly awesome!

SUPPORT iTUNES
I would like to say how very disappointed I am that ABC has decided to axe "Night Stalker" after airing only six episodes; I loved the premise of the show and looked forward to seeing more mysteries and revelations about Kolchak's tragedy. However, I would also like to say thank you very much for making “The Sea,” the unaired conclusion of “The Source,” available for purchase on iTunes Music Store. After not seeing the episode available on iTunes on the Friday after it was supposed to air, I despaired of ever seeing "Night Stalker" or finding out what happened. I hope that the other unaired episodes will find their way onto the store, and I urge other fans of "Night Stalker" to make their enthusiasm for the show felt by buying one or all of the episodes.

I was a new fan of the show, and I am really sorry to see this great program killed before it had a chance. I am sure you probably know that iTunes now has an exclusive episode of "Night Stalker" ("The Sea") available for purchase. I am sure the show's fans might appreciate that you mention it in you blog, since it is the second part of the cliff hanger.

WHY
Why ABC cancelled "Night Stalker," I'll never know. All I know is that it was one of the most brilliant shows out there. I will miss its originality and style, which was greatly needed in a world dominated by "Crime Scene Investigation." "Night Stalker" was a show that both my dad and I enjoyed, and that statement alone has to say something good about the show. I am going to miss it a lot, but I hope that Mr. Spotnitz and his genius crew don't give up hope because of this, and I hope that they go on to do better things and hopefully, some of those things will have to do with my beloved "X-Files." But if not, Frank Spotnitz, you're a genius, and I am positive that you are headed for something great.

STILL IN SHOCK
I am unfortunately not surprised that this has happened to the present incarnation of "Night Stalker," but that makes it none the less just as tragic.
I'm still in shock that ABC has cancelled "Night Stalker." The show seemed to have so much potential, yet ABC barely gave it a chance. I was (and still am) a HUGE "X-Files" fan, and this honestly was the first show since then that I have truly enjoyed. I would love to see another network pick it up someday. Any chance of that? Thank you so much for sharing this great show with us, and best of luck in the future.

Well... (insert melancholy sigh here)... I just read about "Night Stalker" (being cancelled) on your website, Mr. Spotnitz. I am SOOO very disappointed.
As an X-Phile from day one, I look for and forward to your work so I was naturally thrilled to see "Night Stalker" as one of your projects. I was completely hooked from the very first episode. I loved Stuart Townsend and thought his character was great and complicated.
When it wasn't on last (Thursday) night, I searched frantically online for what I was afraid I would find out -- and did. I thought ABC had really stepped up the quality of their shows last season with "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" and while I do love those, I had hoped they would carry over that success into 2005 with "NS." I just don't think they gave it enough of a chance or promo coverage not to mention the fact that they put a fledgling show opposite "CSI" - the good "CSI." Why didn't they give it the ol' time slot change to try & ramp up ratings??
I only saw one promo and no one else I told about the show even knew what I was talking about. It was like ABC put all their eggs in one basket with the never ending ads for "Invasion," which just isn't that good. So once again... we bid farewell to good, well-written television with interesting characters that are just a bit outside the box. Thanks... and keep up the great work!

I was a fan of the original cult classic, and was originally very wary of the current version that retells the story with a slightly diffrent attitude and bent. I watched and was pleasently surprised with its artistic prose and theme of we don't know all that the night hides. The strong characters and storylines pulled me in more than most of the drama, action, and humour on television today.
Even though the show is good, especially for a brand new show, it could not have been better timed. The public is no longer oversaturated from "X-Files" (and the paranormal/conspiritorial/Ufological shows its success inspired) being played on television accross several channels, several times a day, running through five or more seasons in a year, year after year. There was enough of a respite, and with the North American populations becoming more spirtual and newer evidence of goverment scandals and conspiracies coming to light, the viewing audiences were ready for more. "Night Stalker" delivered, although it was still a diamond in the rough and needed a little time to fully develop.
There was a problem though...
They put it up against a hit show with a cult following, top ratings, big budget, seasons of backstory, and a large regular publicity for every episode.
Was the programmer who did this wearing the executioner's hood before the first episode was shown, or did he/she put it on just for the cancelation???
Please shop the show until you find someone who will really apriciate it and give it the time to mature into the show us fans know it can be.

I am an avid "Night Stalker" fan in the humble state of Louisiana. We have been through so many tragedies this year, and I think that the cancellation of "Night Stalker" on ABC has been added to my list of woes! I was so distraught and disappointed when I heard the news of the series' cancellation. I was wondering if the series, or part of it, will ever be released to purchase on DVD. Especially during the holiday season, I'm sure that many of the saddened fans would love to see this in their stockings this Christmas! Even if it is not possible to release it in this time frame, it would be awesome if I could see the episodes that we as fans have been deprived of. "Night Stalker" was a great quality show that surpassed many of the forensic and courtroom dramas. Stuart Townsend is a great actor, and I was so sad to see him leave the small screen so soon. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think it is just terrible of ABC to cancel "Night Stalker" that quickly. To not even have the decency to air the final three episodes is just more of the same from these networks who only get their ratings from a so-called "sample" of the population. I have watched every episode and in an age of these silly reality shows it was a breath of fresh air. I have watched my last program on ABC or any of its sister networks ie ESPN. They obviously have no regard for the common folk. Good luck on future endeavors.

I just wanted to let you know that I tuned in to watch "Night Stalker" and, not having heard that it was cancelled, was heartily disappointed to see "Primetime" playing. I did some poking around and found your site. I just want to add my own lament to those already expressed. I waited all week for this show every week and was always thrilled with each episode. The fact that ABC cancelled it and right in the middle of a two-part episode is crap and I fully intend to make them aware of my feelings.
I am sorry for all involved. It really was one of two shows I watched each week.

Thanks, ABC, for cancelling "Night Stalker" so I can watch something about Anna Nicole Smith -- again. And watch the new Madonna commercial for her new CD that is coming out. NOT.
"Thanks ABC" for getting rid of an original/brilliant show and making me watch "ER" or just go to bed.

I cannot believe that "Night Stalker"... I loved the show. I DVRed other shows just to watch it.
I really hope that they air the remaining episodes.... I mean I am dying to know what was going on with those bikers and of course Carl. I would love to see the Sci-fi Channel pick it up. This show should have stayed on the air. Before dropping the show ABC should have tried another day or time not just canceling it.
I'm sorry.

I am sorry about the "Night Stalker" cancellation. It was my favorite show. It was tough to go against the legendary Darren McGavin, but this show had captured me. I think it would fit perfectly on the Sci-Fi Channel. I sent them an e-mail suggesting such -- hopefully, many others will. I would hate to see this incarnation buried for good. I watched the original religiously as a kid and was looking forward to a new generation.

There was finally an intelligent show on TV and the morons who control what we watch cancelled it... "Night Stalker" was a great show. How annoying!!!!

I can't believe after only six episodes of "Night Stalker," it's canceled. I personally looked forward to it every week. Don't get me wrong -- I like "CSI" as well, but I would tape it to watch later and faithfully tuned my TV to "Night Stalker." Is there any hope of another channel such as the Sci-Fi Channel picking it up? It was a fantastic show, I am a fan of the old "Night Stalker" and watched it as a kid and was pumped to see a new updated version of it. I know there's a fan base out there for it and can only hope it will continue via another channel.

I cannot believe ABC did something like this. It truly was a great show, but stuck in a lousy timeslot. I hope you are actively shopping the show around in the hopes that some other network will capitalize on ABC's inept decision. I enjoyed the original series greatly and the creepy episodes of the "X-Files" always made me nostalgic for it. I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to see this brought back. There is definitely a need for it with today’s current TV offerings. I wish you the best of luck.

We will continue to post as much of your correspondence as we can, but a flood of hundreds of e-mails after last night's "Night Stalker" didn't air temporarily crashed our server. We are working to get it back up as quickly as possible. In the meantime, thank you all for your support and sympathy. It's greatly appreciated.
SAD IN KANSAS
Ahh, I am sad to see the show go.... I was in love with it. And the car ;) It was the only show I have been excited about in quite sometime... And now it's gone...
There isn't one show that I watch religiously now... It's just depressing that a show that has such imagination and creativity behind it doesn't go over in a world that is over saturated in "CSI" shows and "reality" TV. Some of us have brains and like using them when being entertained. (You know mentally stimulating, something that is lost these days on the masses.)
I would like to hope it isn't The End, end of the show. I would hope for a twist of fate. But TV is tough... Best of luck. Maybe you can shop the show or something...
Thanks for at least entertaining this girl for a short time this fall!!! And giving me somehting to look foreward on TV even though it was short-lived.
Of course, the plug just had to be pulled in the middle of a two-parter... :(
And of course I didn't find out about it until today. You know the *cough* "entertainment" shows are too busy plugging where a certain socialite partied the night before.... And the like (i'm being nice here) heh... God forbid they actually show anything about TV shows... But I guess life isn't fair...

HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT
What a huge disappointment to find out that ABC pulled "Night Stalker." This was absolutely the only show on TV that I looked forward to. A breath of fresh air in the over saturated market of "reality" shows and the multitude of "CSI"/"Law and Order" clones. Why did the network put it in such a hopeless time slot? I don't think they cared about this show from the beginning, which just boggles my mind. Frank Spotnitz deserves more respect. This show never had a chance and it's really a shame. And for ABC to not even have the decency to air the conclusion of last week's episode for the fans who did tune in every week is totally inconsiderate. I for one already voiced my complaint to them and I don't plan to ever support their programs again. They don't even stand behind their shows or respect their viewers. I believe they should've given this awesome show more support from the start and switched it to another night. I agree with the other fans that you should try to shop "NS" to some decent networks that would appreciate your efforts. Perhaps Sci-Fi, as others suggested? They also play the old "Night Stalker" series. I at least would like to see it come out on DVD in the future with the 3 episodes we were completely robbed of. We all want to know what happened to Kolchak's wife! Please don't leave us hanging. Thank you for a great show.

MOST UNFORTUNATE
I just read the blog on the cancellation of "Night Stalker." This is most unfortunate. We were excited when the new season started with the addition of "Night Stalker." This is the one show that we made sure we watched every week. Last week's excellent episode with the exception of those three dreaded words 'to be continued.' Why cancel the show? Why not give it a chance? New time slot? Stuart Townsend was wonderful, a part suited for him.
Good luck to all,

TRULY DISAPPOINTED
I am so disappointed and depressed to find out that the new "Night Stalker" show has been cancelled by ABC. I am in my mid 40s and grew up as a fan of the original series. I thought this modernization was brilliant, interesting, engaging, and spirited.
As a person who does not watch a lot of TV, this was my favorite show out of 3 that I am currently following, ABC's "Desperate Housewives," and WB's "Supernatural" being the other two.
I am so upset with ABC over this, I may even stop watching "Desperate Housewives," although I enjoy it tremendously.
"Night Stalker" was so promising, so well written and so well acted. As is natural for fans of original series, I was not sure how I would take to it, but even after seeing the first episode I was hooked. As another poster mentioned, I do feel like crying because it feels like a real loss to me. And for ABC to do this, especially, in the middle of a cliffhanger is the utmost cruelty and irony of the whole debacle. All I can do is sit here and shake my head and wonder why...
Thank you, cast and crew, for a wonderful six episodes. You were all brilliant and beautiful, and you deserved more of a chance than you were given. I hope, at least, we can see the remaining filmed episodes (6-part 2, 7, 8, and 9) sometime in the future. I will pray that maybe the show can be reborn on a different network.

A SHAME
It's a real shame that ABC has pulled the plug on "Night Stalker," as it was the only show that I watch all week long that I ever looked forward to, that left me wondering, asking questions, and very anxiously awaiting their answers. I've never had so many questions watching a show as I did during the Pilot episode of "Night Stalker," I've never laid awake at night trying to figure it out myself. Now ABC will never supply me with those answers that I long so badly for, and that just finally goes to show me all that they were ever worth.
So, here's another person hoping beyond hope for a DVD of whatever episodes that were aired, and I'll be there buying it the second it is released! Just because some people can't handle a certain type of show, and some would rather the billion "CSI" shows out there, it doesn't mean that there aren't people out there with some taste left.

JACKED
Man, did you get the short end of the big ABC stick! Why on earth would they take the time to hire you, a hugely successful writer/producer for "The X-Files," develop the concept, then shove you into the most god awful time slot possible and give you only six episodes to make an impact? What if Fox had a similiar attitude with "X-Files?" Then one of the greatest shows ever would have never been.
If there's any satisfaction in the knowledge you put six great shows on the air, well, oh crap, there's absolutely no satisfaction in any of that nonsense. You got jacked! Hopefully, the next great idea you come up with you will pitch to Fox, WB or UPN, or better yet, a cable network (only 13 episodes a year) who all would most likely give your show all it really needed -- time to succeed. In fact, I'll hope for a miracle... you'll quickly pitch "Night Stalker" to one of those entities before your cast and crew scatter to the four winds.

Any chance you could bring the show over to Sci-Fi Channel? I bet they would go for it! I'm figuring you are getting inundated with e-mail about the cancellation, so that proves right there you had a loyal following. I hope you can get the TV series onto DVD, even if it is only 9 or 10 shows. Millions of people are left hanging now, arrrrgh! Dont give up -- I wouldn't!
Joey
I was really looking forward to seeing the episode that Mira Furlan was in (as Marlene Shields in "Timeless," Episode 9). From the way she described it, it sounded like it would have been a really interesting show. From what she said at the con I was at this past weekend, her experience with the show was a very positive and enjoyable one.
Is there any chance that "Night Stalker" will be released on DVD? I know this is a short run for a DVD set these days, even if the finished but unaired episodes were included, but I'm hoping. If it ever is and the 9th episode is included, I'd be happy to help get the word out to all of Mira's fans. And I'd definitely be buying at least one set.

I just found out about the cancellation of "Night Stalker" (without even airing Part 2 of the story), so I'd like to add my congratulations to you on a fine series and voice my repeated frustration with ABC for scheduling excellent shows ("Night Stalker," "Murder One," "Vengeance Unlimited," "Cracker," to name a few) on Thursday nights (easily the most competitive night of the week) and not giving them the chance to thrive.
Any chance of taking the show to the Sci-Fi Channel? Quite honestly, they need some quality over there right about now.
Although only for a short time thanks to some very shortsighted people (was Jamie Tarses hired back perhaps?), you gave me something to look forward to watching on Thursday nights.

I am so sorry ABC cancelled the show - it was one of the new season's best, genuinely creepy, well-written, well-acted, with such promise - thank you for an excellent reimagining of an old favorite. Is there any chance another network would pick the show up? That unaired episodes will be aired or otherwise available? If there is a petition website, please let me know. Thanks for the hours of entertainment you gave me.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about the cancellation. I was devastated when I read the news (I almost cried). In my opinion, "Night Stalker" was the best newcomer on TV this year. It's a pity your show had to compete with "CSI." It would have had a much better chance at survival in the time slot after "Lost."
Do you think it's possible "Night Stalker" will be picked up by a smaller network? If not, I assume we cannot hope for a decent closure to the main storyline. :(
I'd like to thank you and all the cast and crew. It was a wonderful experience, one I'll never forget.

ABC has pulled the plug on the new "Night Stalker" series just as the series was starting to present some interesting character development and plot momentum. Personally, I don't feel that the series was given the chance it deserves. I mean, pick it up for a complete season, nurture it, let it develop, give it a good chance to progress and develop a viewer/fan base AND THEN determine whether the series is producing the numbers ABC wants. Any possibility of reviving "Night Stalker" elsewhere and, if so, what part should fans play in the revival?
Michael

Like many long-time fans of the Kolchak character, I felt some reservations about the latest incarnation of "Night Stalker." However, the treatment of his paradoxical nature, i.e. relentless investigator mixed with repressed personality, was being developed with care. There were also seeds of evolution, especially vis-a-vis his relationship with his female colleague -- one of the inevitable parallels with the protagonists of "The X-Files." How sad that a network willing to take a chance on resurrecting the Kolchak concept lacked the wisdom to provide a time slot, or time, for this show to develop and find its audience.
I hope that it may be possible to pull together some sort of wrap-up, which would be appealing to potential DVD placement. Perhaps you can find a way to add one or two scenes to have the brief series conclude with the esoteric yet ethereal feel of Patrick McGoohan's 17-episode classic, "The Prisoner." Anything along the lines of the latter could be memorable.

Sorry to hear about the show's cancellation. It just proves how this style of filmmaking has nearly gone from our screens. It's truly beginning to feel like the end of an era.
Being in Scotland, UK, I never got the chance to see "Night Stalker" in its "entirety." Have you any thoughts as to putting it on DVD so that the rest of the world might be allowed to rediscover Carl Kolchak, et al? For instance, look at what the release of "Firefly" on DVD did for its success.
Keep on writing, don't lose heart. You and your colleagues are an inspiration for all aspiring filmmakers out here!

I'm so sad to hear "Night Stalker" has been cancelled! I'm so sad for you and your team (you all did a great job -- actors, writers, directors...)! I will definitely miss this show!
It was so brilliant and entertaining! (Already have a multitude of questions about what was about to happen next... questions that won't get any answers, unfortunately.) This visually stunning show deserved to have a better chance. A chance ABC clearly never gave it. That's such a shame. "Night Stalker" was a real gem, but nobody cared to pay attention. Everybody was so busy comparing it to the original "Kolchak" or "The X-Files," they didn't even take it for what it was: a thrilling, innovative and extremely well-written show, with a lot of thoughtful references and a mythology that was obviously going to be particularly thought-provoking.
I'm so frustrated now. We won't even get to see the second part of the last episode any time soon. That's so cruel of ABC! Still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a DVD release. And I'm sure we'll hear about future projects of yours soon. I really hope so! You're such a talented writer and producer! All in all, it's really sad "Night Stalker" came to an end this quickly, but it was great as long as it lasted. Thanks a lot, and good luck!

I must say I'm very disappointed in ABC! Of course, this cancellation doesn't come as a real surprise. Before the show even started, everybody predicted it would be axed early because of this ruthless time slot. And that's certainly what's even more frustrating: ABC knew perfectly well it would be extremely difficult to go up against the USA's top-rated show, but they didn't do anything to try and promote "Night Stalker." It seems like they never really wanted to give it a chance after all. They decided to axe it while its mythology was only beginning!! (How cruel and inept is that?) They decided to axe it without even trying it in another time slot (they did it last year for "Life As We Know It," why not for "Night Stalker"?). And that's a real shame because "Night Stalker" had better ratings than "Life As We Know It" had so far. So where's the logic in there?

While I was thrilled to discover a link to my interview with you on your website, that thrill was more than offset by the sad news that "Night Stalker" has been canceled.
I thought the show was moving along pretty well -- the plotting was strong, the writing excellent, and the cast? Amazing!
I have to say that I'm also ticked that now I won't get to see the conclusion to the cliffhanger unless the show is made available on DVD.
Anyway, thanks for doing such a great job on "Night Stalker." I really can't see ABC finding anything that will perform better in that time slot -- or be as much chilling fun...

I am so very sorry to hear about "Night Stalker" being cancelled.
It is a great series and you have done a terrific job all the way around, despite what the ratings say. Why couldn't ABC move the series to another night instead of giving it the ax? I am perplexed at these dumb networks. If I were you, I would try HBO!
Know that there were many people who liked this series and watched it every week.

Wow... A casual visit to your blog ended up very badly, as I've just learned that ABC has pulled the plug on "Night Stalker." So November sweeps killed the show. But I'm afraid for ABC, like Fox after cancelling "Millennium," they won't find a show that works better on that particular day and hour in a long, long time.
I just wanted to thank you, the cast, the writers and directors for working so hard to bring us a brand-new, innovative, engaging and visually stunning "Night Stalker." To this day, I still cherish and watch again and again "Harsh Realm" episodes, and I'm sure the same will be said about this show. I hope we will be able to see the rest of the completed episodes and, hopefully, that the show will make it to DVD one day.
This is all just a shame, really, as you evidently put so much energy and effort in creating a universe, a major and complex storyline...
I wish you and the rest of the crew the best of luck on all your future projects. (I'm somehow hoping to see another Spotnitz show next season, but I guess time will tell -- and then you also happen to have movie work to do!)

I'm very sad to hear that "Night Stalker" has been cancelled. It was great, and getting even better by the weeks.
I would like to know if we are going to see the rest of the episodes that were filmed, and if there is a possibility of another network picking it up? ABC never gave it a chance, now did they? Isn't it a bit premature to cancel after only five episodes?
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for providing a rare and welcomed entertainment that lasted not long enough in our home.
Good luck, and many thanks to the cast and crew.

Just as it was getting interesting, now it's over?? I was hoping Carl and Perri would get more involved with each other. Miss Union is stunning!
By the way, any chance of you putting together a DVD set for the show, including any episodes that didn't get aired? Oh, and I have this really great script for you to read (JUST KIDDING).
I do want to thank you for all the work you put into it. I could sense everyone was having a really good time, which made me enjoy the show even more. I wish you had gotten more of a chance with it. But you know how it is, the almighty dollar is the only thing that matters in Hollywood. This sort of feels like a death -- maybe not as bad, but it's up there. Let me say this: All your hard work and love that went into the show did not go unappreciated, believe me. I know you all had your hearts really into it, big time. It showed. I'll miss. Take care. It's never the end, only the beginning...

It is with regret that I confirm "Night Stalker" has been canceled. While I’m disappointed the series has come to an end, I am enormously grateful for the experience and the opportunity given me by the network and Touchstone Television. I would like to thank our amazingly talented cast, wonderful crew, killer post-production department, terrific writing staff, producers and partners in crime Daniel Sackheim and John Peter Kousakis, the incredible Jana Fain, and all of you who watched and enjoyed the show.
It was a blast.
